EDITORS COMMENTS
This handfinished chromolithograph by Henry Noel Humphreys, based on an illustration by Jane Loudon from Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials, published in London in 1849, showcases a stunning array of Telekia and Rudbeckia species. The intricately detailed print features the Showy Telekia, Telekia speciosa, with its large, white, daisy-like flowers and distinctive, lobed leaves. Adjacent to it is the Glandulous Elecampane, Inula glandulosa, characterized by its tall, yellow, composite flowers and fuzzy stems. The Telekia and Rudbeckia genera are both part of the Asteraceae family, known for their distinctive flower structures and vibrant colors. The Trifoliate Siliphium, Siliphium trifoliatum, is depicted with its triangular, green leaves and yellow, daisy-like flowers. Nearby, the Ratibida columnaris, or pinnated rudbeckia, boasts tall, spiky inflorescences with golden-yellow flowers and pinnate leaves. The Rudbeckia species showcased include the Pinnated Rudbeckia, Rudbeckia pinnata, with its large, yellow, coneflowers and pinnate leaves, as well as the Three-lobed Rudbeckia, Rudbeckia triloba, and the Tripartite-leaved Golden-crown, Chrysostemma tripteria. Each species is rendered in exquisite detail, capturing their unique beauty and character. This chromolithograph, produced using the lithographic printing process, showcases the artistic skill and botanical knowledge of the time. It serves as a testament to the rich diversity of the Telekia and Rudbeckia genera and the importance of documenting and preserving the natural world.
