This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the Temple of Zeus or Jupiter at Mount Olympus, one of the most iconic structures in Greek mythology. The temple, dedicated to the king of the gods, is shown here in both front and rear views, providing a unique perspective of its grand design. The temple, located in ancient Greece, is shown in its ancient state before the destruction caused by invasions and earthquakes. The elevation on the left side of the image reveals the temple's symmetrical design, with a pronaos (anteior pronaos) and a vestibule leading to the cella, or main hall, where the statue of Zeus was housed. The temple's columns are adorned with intricate Ionic order decorations, typical of ancient Greek architecture. The plan view on the right side of the image offers a bird's-eye perspective of the temple's layout. The temple's rectangular shape is evident, with a central naos (sanctuary) surrounded by a peristyle (colonnade) and an opisthodomos (rear chamber).
