1. Title: Thomas de Foix, Seigneur de Lescun (Lord of Lescun), Marechal de Foix (Marshal of Foix): A Prominent French Soldier of the Late 15th and Early 16th Centuries Thomas de Foix, Seigneur de Lescun (1483-1525), was a distinguished French soldier and military leader of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Born into the noble House of Foix, he held the title of Marshal of Foix and was a significant figure during the Italian Wars. This handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard, after a figure in Roger de Gaignières portfolios from Le Bibliophile Jacob aka Paul Lacroix's Costumes Historiques de la France (Historical Costumes of France), offers a glimpse into the appearance of this remarkable military commander. Born in 1483, Thomas de Foix began his military career under King Louis XII of France. He gained prominence during the Italian Wars, serving under various French and Spanish monarchs. His military prowess was evident in his successful campaigns against the Swiss Confederacy and the League of Cambrai. In 1513, he played a crucial role in the Battle of Novara, where the French forces defeated the Spanish. The image portrays Thomas de Foix in full armour, wearing the distinctive livery of the Foix family. The intricate design of his armour, complete with a crest bearing the emblem of the House of Foix, reflects the high level of craftsmanship prevalent during the Renaissance period. The lithograph also reveals the finery of his clothing, including a richly decorated surcoat and a flowing mantle, which would have been essential elements of a nobleman's attire during this time. Thomas de Foix, Seigneur de Lescun, passed away in 1525, leaving behind a legacy as a formidable military leader and a symbol of the noble House of Foix. This evocative lithograph serves as a testament to his enduring impact on French military history.
