EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the Triple Deities or Mother Goddesses of the ancient Germans, known as Mairae or Mairabus. The image is inscribed with the Latin phrase "In honorem Domitus divinae diis Mairabus Deae matri o matrone," which translates to "In honor of the divine goddesses Mairabus, Mother and Matron." The triple deities are shown in a formation reminiscent of a battle or encampment, with one figure riding on a horse and holding a spear, another seated on a throne with a scepter and cornucopia, and the third standing and holding a shield and spear. In the background, a German army is seen in formation, with Roman legions and their eagles, wagons, and camp followers in the distance. The scene is reminiscent of the encampments and battles described in the Commentaries of Julius Caesar, and is likely inspired by the historical fashion and artistic traditions of the time, as depicted in Andrea Palladio's Il Costume Antico e Moderno (The Ancient and Modern Costume), published in 1575. The engraving is a beautiful example of the historical and artistic interest in the costumes and cultures of ancient peoples, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the visual representations of the ancient Germans and their religious practices.
