EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking chromolithograph, titled "Syphilitic Tubercles and Syphilide," depicts the secondary stage symptoms of tubercular syphilis as illustrated in T. Sinclaire's contribution to Freeman J. Bumstead's Atlas of Venereal Diseases, published in Philadelphia in 1868. The first American edition of Auguste Cullier's Precis iconographique des maladies veneriennes served as the source material for this scientific illustration. The image shows the devastating impact of the disease on various parts of the body. On the torso and arms, raised, nodular tubercles, a hallmark of tubercular syphilis, are evident. These lesions, which can appear anywhere on the body, are characterized by their firm, rubbery texture and their tendency to form in clusters. On the face, a suppurating syphilide lesion is shown. Syphilide, or secondary syphilis, is characterized by the appearance of a rash, which can manifest as papules, pustules, or flat, red, or dark patches. In this case, the lesion on the face has progressed to a suppurative stage, with pus forming at its center. The image also shows signs of syphilitic involvement in other parts of the body. On the hand, onychia, or syphilitic nail changes, are evident. The affected fingers and thumb show signs of swelling, discoloration, and deformity. On the foot, a syphilitic toe is shown, with signs of inflammation and possible ulceration. Additionally, the image includes an illustration of iritis, or inflammation of the iris, which can be a complication of syphilis. The affected eye is shown with a cloudy appearance and a red, inflamed iris. This powerful and detailed illustration serves as a reminder of the devastating effects of syphilis during the late 19th century, and the importance of medical advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of this and other sexually transmitted diseases.
