EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases two intriguing marine invertebrates: the tubeworm (Serpula vermicularis, also known as Serpula contortuplicata) and the fanworm (Amphictene auricoma, also known as Amphitrite auricoma). The image is based on an illustration by Zehner from Georg Friedrich Treitschke's renowned Gallery of Natural History, Naturhistorischer Bildersaal des Thierreiches, published in Leipzig in 1842. The tubeworm, with its distinctive elongated body encased in a tubular calcareous tube, is a filter feeder that thrives in deep-sea environments. Its length can reach up to several meters, and it exhibits a remarkable ability to retract back into its tube when threatened. The tubeworm's colouration varies from red to brown, and its tentacles are used to capture food particles from the water. Adjacent to the tubeworm is the fanworm, which is characterized by its feathery, fan-like appendages. The fanworm is a suspension feeder, filtering food particles from the water using its feathery appendages, called cirri. Its body is segmented, and it can grow up to 30 cm in length. The fanworm's colouration is typically pinkish-red, and it is often found in close proximity to the tubeworm, forming large aggregations. This stunning lithograph provides a glimpse into the diverse and fascinating world of deep-sea marine life, showcasing the intricate details of these two remarkable invertebrates. The handcolouring adds an extra layer of depth and beauty to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
