EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts a Tufted Capuchin Monkey (Cebus apella), also known as the Horned Sapajou or the Fat-tailed Capuchin. The monkey is shown in a naturalistic setting, perched on a branch with a lush, tropical forest in the background. The Tufted Capuchin Monkey is native to Central and South America, from Mexico to Brazil, and is known for its distinctive tufts of hair on its ears and face, which resemble horns. This monkey is a highly intelligent and social primate, living in groups of up to 30 individuals. They are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, nuts, seeds, insects, and small vertebrates. The illustration for this engraving was created by James Stewart and the engraving was produced by W.H. Lizars for Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Monkeys, published in Edinburgh in 1844. The Naturalist's Library was a comprehensive series of works on natural history, featuring high-quality illustrations of various species. This particular volume focused on monkeys, and the Tufted Capuchin Monkey was one of many species depicted in the series. The intricate details of the monkey's fur, facial features, and posture are beautifully captured in this engraving, making it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history art.
