This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving showcases the Two-flowered Agave, Dracaena boscii, also known as Littaea geminiflora, Agave geminiflora, Yucca boscii, or Littea di fiori a coppie. The illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy. The Two-flowered Agave is a rare and critically endangered plant species native to Malacca, an island in the western part of the Indian Ocean. This agave is characterized by its distinctive rosette of fleshy, sword-shaped leaves, each adorned with small, white flowers arranged in pairs at the tips. The engraving was expertly executed by the skilled hand of Corsi, under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is celebrated as one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic ability.
