EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving, taken from Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature published in London in 1820, offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of hydraulic systems and pumps. The illustration showcases various types of ancient water pumps that were instrumental in harnessing the power of water for various purposes. At the center of the image, we find the Persian wheel or Sakia, a simple yet effective irrigation system that used a wheel to lift water from a well or a river. To its left, we see the Tantalus or Pythagorean cup, an ancient device that demonstrates the principles of hydraulic potential energy and vacuum. Further to the left, we find the Ctesibius' ancient pump, one of the earliest known reciprocating pumps, which used a piston to lift water. The illustration also includes various other types of pumps such as sucking pumps, which rely on the vacuum created by the water being lifted to draw in more water, forcing pumps, which use external pressure to force water into a container, and lifting pumps, which use a lever to lift water. Lastly, we see a chain pump, which uses a chain to transfer the up-and-down motion of a piston to lift water. These ancient hydraulic systems and pumps have stood the test of time and continue to inspire engineers and inventors to this day. This beautiful and intricately detailed illustration serves as a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of our ancestors, who used their knowledge of physics and engineering to harness the power of water for various applications.
