EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured lithograph, created by Leopold Massard for the renowned French publication "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix and Le Bibliophile Jacob in 1852, provides a vivid depiction of the uniform of a French Commissaire des Guerres during the Napoleonic era. The Commissaire des Guerres, or War Commissary, was a high-ranking military administrative officer responsible for the logistical and financial support of the French army. The uniform, as shown in the print, features a bicorn hat adorned with a cockade and a plume, symbolizing the officer's rank and allegiance to the French Republic. The Commissaire wears a long, double-breasted coat with silver buttons, fastened by a sash around the waist. Underneath the coat, he dons a white waistcoat and breeches, held up by a black leather belt. The uniform is completed with black boots, a sword, and a cane. The Commissaire's sword, with its curved hilt and ornate scabbard, is slung over his right shoulder, while the cane is held in his left hand. The meticulous attention to detail in the handcoloured lithograph brings the uniform to life, showcasing the intricacies of the French military uniforms of the Napoleonic era. The print offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing valuable insight into the appearance and role of the French War Commissary during this period of significant historical importance.
