EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Uniform of the French Light Horse Cavalry (Chevau-Legers), 1790 This handcoloured lithograph, taken from Le Bibliophile Jacob's "Costumes Historiques de la France," provides a detailed and vibrant depiction of the uniform worn by the French Light Horse Cavalry (Chevau-Legers) during the late 18th century. The image showcases the distinctive elements of this elite military unit, which was renowned for its speed, agility, and versatility on the battlefield. The uniform consists of several key components. The gilet, or waistcoat, is made of red fabric with gold braid trim and features a V-shaped opening in the front. The culotte, or breeches, are also red with gold braid and are worn with a white shirt and a cravat. The boots are high and black, reaching up to the knee, and are adorned with gold lacing and buckles. The most prominent feature of the uniform is the bicorn hat, which is worn at a rakish angle. The hat is trimmed with a wide, white cockade and a black band, and it bears the distinctive blue and red cockade of the French Republic. The epaulettes on the shoulders display the rank insignia of the wearer. The Chevau-Legers were equipped with a sword, carried in a scabbard on the left side of the body. The sword, or epee, was a crucial tool for both combat and ceremonial purposes. The uniform's overall design reflects the French military's emphasis on style, functionality, and national pride during the late 18th century. This lithograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of the French military and the iconic uniforms that continue to inspire and fascinate us today.
