EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the uniform of the Garde-du-corps, or King's Bodyguard, during the reign of King Louis XVIII of France (r. 1815-1824). The Garde-du-corps was an elite military unit responsible for the personal protection of the monarch. The uniform, as shown in this print from Le Bibliophile Jacob's "Costumes Historiques de la France," is a testament to the grandeur and opulence of the French court during this period. The guardsman is depicted wearing a tall, peaked casque adorned with a white plume, a white doublet with red facings, and a red waistcoat. His breeches are also red, with a white stripe down the outside seam. The uniform is completed with a pair of black gaiters and a sash in the royal colors of France, blue and white. The guardsman carries a musket slung over his shoulder, with a bayonet attached. The epaulettes on the guardsman's shoulders bear the fleur-de-lis, the symbol of the French monarchy. The uniform is further embellished with gold braid and buttons, adding to its regal appearance. The intricate details of the uniform are beautifully captured in the handcoloured lithograph, making it a valuable historical document and an impressive work of art. This print is from the collection "Costumes Historiques de la France," published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852. The collection was produced by Paul Lacroix under the pseudonym Le Bibliophile Jacob and is considered a seminal work in the study of historical costumes in France. The Garde-du-corps uniform depicted in this print offers a glimpse into the military and courtly traditions of the Bourbon Restoration period in France, a time of political and social change following the Napoleonic Wars.
