EDITORS COMMENTS
Velleia macrophylla, also known as Broad-leaved Euthales or Macrophyllous Euthales, is a rare and striking plant endemic to Western Australia. This exquisite hand-coloured copperplate engraving, created by G. Barclay after a drawing by Miss Sarah Drake, is taken from John Lindley and Robert Sweet's Ornamental Flower Garden and Shrubbery, published in London in 1854 by G. Willis. The Velleia macrophylla is depicted in full bloom, showcasing its large, velvety, and vibrant red-purple flowers. The broad, green leaves, which can grow up to 30 cm long, are also illustrated in great detail. This botanical illustration provides an accurate representation of the plant's unique features, making it an essential addition to any botanical collection. John Lindley (1799-1865) was a renowned British botanist, horticulturist, and botanical illustrator. Robert Sweet (1783-1835) was a British botanist, nurseryman, and botanical collector. Together, they produced several influential works on botany and horticulture. The Velleia macrophylla is native to the south-west of Western Australia and is a protected species. It is found in the understorey of the forest and is characterized by its large, lobed leaves and distinctive flowers. The plant is pollinated by insects, particularly bees, and produces capsules that contain small seeds. This beautiful and intricate hand-coloured copperplate engraving not only serves as a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the 19th century but also highlights the importance of preserving the natural beauty and diversity of the world around us.
