EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving captures the breathtaking view of Cologne Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece located in the heart of Cologne, Germany. The cathedral, officially known as the Hohe Domkirche St. Peter und Maria im Stahlhelme, or the "High Cathedral of St. Peter and Mary in the Iron Helmet," is a true architectural marvel, with its twin towers reaching towards the heavens and its intricate, ornate facade adorned with gargoyles and intricate sculptures. The image, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" published in Florence in 1844, offers a unique perspective of the cathedral, with a figure standing before it, gazing up in awe. The figure, dressed in the fashion of the 14th century, is believed to represent King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia, who was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in Cologne in 1376. He is depicted with his seal, or bulla aurea, in his hand, a symbol of his imperial power. The engraving also features a seal or bulla, known as the Golden Bull of Charles IV, which was issued in 1356 and played a significant role in the election of the Holy Roman Emperor. The bulla is depicted with the figure of Emperor Charles IV, who is shown with his feet on a globe, signifying his power and authority over the empire. This historical illustration not only showcases the beauty and grandeur of Cologne Cathedral but also provides a glimpse into the fashion and political history of the time. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the engraving make it a true work of art, transporting us back in time to the medieval era.
