EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Corsi from Giulio Ferrario's "Il Costume Antico e Moderno," offers a breathtaking view of the Palace of the Caesars in Rome, also known as the House of Augustus or Domus Augusti. Built on the Palatine Hill by Emperor Augustus around 27 BC, the palace served as a residence for the Roman emperors until the 5th century AD. In the foreground of the image, two brave men engage in a fierce battle with a lion in a small amphitheater. The crowd, dressed in ancient Roman attire, watches in awe and anticipation. The Palace of the Caesars, with its grand columns and imposing architecture, looms in the background. The Palazzo dei Cesari, as it is also known, is a significant historical site in Rome. It was the residence of several emperors, including Tiberius, Caligula, and Nero. The palace was later used as a fortress during the Middle Ages and was known as Castello Sant'Angelo. The view also showcases other iconic Roman landmarks, such as the Mausoleum of Hadrian, built in 134 AD, and the Castel Sant'Angelo, which was used as a fortress and a prison throughout history. The Aelian Bridge, also known as Pons Aelius, can be seen in the distance, connecting the right bank of the Tiber River to the city. The image also features St. Peter's Basilica and the Ponte Sant'Angelo, which were not built until several centuries after the time depicted in the engraving. The Aelian Bridge, however, was an important structure during the time of the Palace of the Caesars, serving as a vital connection between the city and its suburbs. This stunning illustration not only provides a glimpse into the ancient Roman world but also showcases the intricate details of the costumes worn during that time. It is a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of Rome, which continues to captivate and inspire visitors from around the world.
