EDITORS COMMENTS
El Querebya, also known as El Querebyn, was a village located on the banks of the Blue Nile River in what is now Sudan, during the time of the Funj Kingdom of Sennar (1504-1821). This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created in 1834 by Giulio Ferrari for his publication "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," offers a glimpse into the daily life of this Nubian community. In the center of the image, a cluster of round huts made of mud and thatch are arranged around a communal area. Women can be seen grinding flour using large stones set on the ground. The laborious process of transforming grains into sustenance was a common sight in rural villages throughout the Funj Sultanate. The scene is further enlivened by the presence of women dancing to the music of a Nubian lyre, a stringed instrument that was widely used in the region. The joyous expression on their faces and the graceful movements of their bodies suggest a sense of community and celebration. A camel, a vital mode of transportation in the arid landscape, is tethered nearby, while the rugged terrain of granite rocks in the background underscores the harsh yet beautiful environment that the people of El Querebya called home. This image not only provides a window into the past but also highlights the rich cultural heritage of the Nubian people and their connection to the land and the Blue Nile River.
