EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph showcases three stunning Passiflora species: Water Lemon (Passiflora laurifolia), Jamaican Honeysuckle (Passiflora laurifolia var. jamaicensis), and Orange Lilikoi (Passiflora tinifolia). The image is taken from "Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe," a masterful horticultural publication by Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaires, published in Ghent, Belgium in 1857. The Water Lemon, also known as Jamaican Passionfruit, is depicted in the center of the print. Its vibrant yellow fruits, resembling small lemons, hang from the vine, surrounded by large, glossy green leaves. The Jamaican Honeysuckle, with its attractive, white, trumpet-shaped flowers, is illustrated on the left side of the print. Its leaves are dark green and have a glossy sheen. The Orange Lilikoi, or Passionfruit, is illustrated on the right side of the print. Its orange-yellow fruits are adorned with a net-like pattern, and the plant bears large, green, heart-shaped leaves. The intricate details of the flowers, fruits, and leaves are beautifully rendered in this handcoloured lithograph, providing a captivating glimpse into the world of Passiflora. The publication of "Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe" was a significant contribution to the study and cultivation of exotic plants during the Victorian era, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the natural world. This print is a testament to the artistry and scientific knowledge of its creators, Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaires.
