EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Weasel (Mustela nivalis, formerly known as Mustela vulgaris), a small mammal belonging to the weasel family. The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library, published in Edinburgh in 1836. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of James Stewart and expertly engraved by Lizars. The Weasel is a slender, agile creature, with a length of around 18 inches and a weight of up to 1.5 pounds. Its fur is typically brownish-gray with black-tipped hairs, making it well-camouflaged in its woodland habitat. This weasel subspecies, known as the snow weasel or Arctic weasel, is adapted to cold climates and is found in the northern hemisphere. The Weasel is an opportunistic predator, feeding on a variety of prey including rodents, birds, and eggs. It is known for its ability to kill prey much larger than itself, using its powerful jaws and sharp teeth to deliver a fatal bite. The Weasel is also an adept burrower, using its long, slender body to navigate through the underground tunnels of its den. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the natural history of the Weasel but also highlights the exceptional artistry and craftsmanship of the time. The intricate details, from the individual hairs on the Weasel's coat to the textured background, make this a stunning addition to any collection of natural history prints.
