1. Title: A Comparative Study of White Dodos: Cornelis Saftleven's 17th Century Masterpiece and Jan Goeimare's 19th Century Interpretation This photograph features two exquisite white dodo heads, one painted by Cornelis Saftleven in 1637 (25) and the other by Jan Goeimare in 1853 (26). Both artists' works are displayed here for a rare and intriguing comparison. Cornelis Saftleven's white dodo head (25) is a masterpiece from the Museum Boijmans of Rotterdam. This painting, created over three centuries before modern taxidermy techniques, is an exceptional example of the artist's skill in capturing the unique features of this extinct bird. The white dodo, scientifically known as Raphus cucullatus, was native to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Saftleven's dodo head is characterized by its large, round eyes, distinctive beak, and the prominent wattle under its beak. Jan Goeimare's white dodo head (26), on the other hand, is a more recent interpretation of the bird. Created in the mid-19th century, Goeimare's painting reflects the scientific understanding of the dodo during that time. The heliotype image of this work is taken from Dr. Anthonie Cornelis Oudemans' "Dodo Studies," published in Amsterdam by Johannes Muller in 1917. Goeimare's dodo head is also depicted with large eyes and a distinctive beak, but its features are more detailed and anatomically accurate compared to Saftleven's painting. The comparison of these two white dodo heads offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of scientific understanding and artistic representation of this enigmatic and extinct bird. The photograph serves as a testament to the enduring fascination with the dodo and the role of art and science in documenting its history.
