This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Whorl-leaf Watermilfoil, Myriophyllum verticillatum, a beautiful aquatic plant native to Europe, Asia, and North America. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The Whorl-leaf Watermilfoil is characterized by its whorls of leaves arranged around the stem, giving it an elegant and intricate appearance. The leaves themselves are narrow and elongated, with a distinct midrib and fine, thread-like veins. The plant is typically submerged in water, with only the uppermost leaves occasionally emerging. The illustration also includes several other aquatic plants, including Sanguinaria canadensis (Bloodroot), Nevadilla aquatica (Water Willow), Paronychia argentea (Silver Pondweed), Illecebrum verticillatum (Water Purslane), and Illecebrum parviflorum (Littleflower Waterpurslane). These plants were likely included to provide context and to show the diversity of aquatic vegetation.
