EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking chromolithograph depicts a Wild American Turkey Cock, scientifically known as Meleagris gallopavo, proudly displaying its vibrant plumage. The image was sent specifically for portraiture to the New York State Poultry Society by Mr. Simpson, and was created by the renowned Vincent Brooks Day & Son, based on an illustration by J.W. Ludlow from Lewis Wright's The Illustrated Book of Poultry, published by Cassell, London, in 1890. The Wild American Turkey, also known as the Eastern Wild Turkey, was a popular subject of ornithological and poultry exhibitions during the Victorian era, with many breeders and enthusiasts striving to preserve and showcase its exotic beauty. This particular turkey cock is adorned with a rose-combed, dorking-style head, which was a popular breeding trait during the time. The turkey's impressive display is reminiscent of its historical use in cockfighting, which was a controversial and feverish pastime during the 1800s. However, this image serves as a testament to the bird's natural grandeur and beauty, rather than its role in the sport. The turkey cock was a champion in various shows, including the Crystal Palace Exhibition in London in 1871, the Southampton Show in 1870, the Cheltenham Show in 1870, and the Dublin Show in 1872. The intricate details of the feathers and the intense gaze of the bird convey the sense of pride and admiration that breeders and collectors held for these magnificent creatures during the poultry craze of the Victorian era.
