WW1- L Battery in action at Nery
WW1 - L Battery Royal Horse Artillery in action at Nery - September 1, 1914. A British cavalry brigade preparing to leave their overnight bivouac were attacked by a German cavalry division of about twice their strength, shortly after dawn. Both sides fought dismounted; the British artillery was mostly put out of action in the first few minutes but a gun of L Battery, Royal Horse Artillery kept up a steady fire for two and a half hours, against a full battery of German artillery. Three member sof L Battery were awarded the Victoria Cross and the battery was later awarded the honour title of " Nery".

This evocative image captures the intensity and chaos of the Nery Affair during the early days of the First World War on September 1, 1914. The scene depicts L Battery of the Royal Horse Artillery in action, as they valiantly defended a British cavalry brigade against a German cavalry division that outnumbered them significantly. As the sun rose, the British forces were taken by surprise, and both sides were forced to dismount and engage in a fierce skirmish. The British artillery was largely put out of commission within the initial minutes, but one gun from L Battery continued to fire relentlessly against a full German artillery battery for an astonishing two and a half hours. The bravery and heroism displayed by the three members of L Battery during this harrowing encounter were later recognized with the prestigious Victoria Cross. The title of honor, "Nery," was bestowed upon the battery in recognition of their fearless and gallant stand.
