EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the breathtaking view of Fiesole, a charming hilltown located just a few kilometers north of Florence, Italy, in the early 1920s. The ruins of the Roman Theatre, partially hidden by the overgrown vegetation, add an intriguing historical element to the idyllic scene. The Roman Theatre of Fiesole, built during the 1st century AD, once held an audience of up to 5,000 spectators. It is believed that the theatre was used for various performances, including gladiatorial contests and theatrical productions. Over the centuries, the theatre fell into disrepair, and it was not until the late 19th century that archaeological excavations began to uncover its remains. The photograph, taken circa 1920, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the ruins were still largely untouched by modern development. The cemetery in the foreground, with its simple white crosses, adds a poignant touch to the image, reminding us of the passage of time and the transience of human existence. The rolling hills of the Chianti region, dotted with vineyards and olive groves, stretch out in the background, providing a picturesque backdrop to the ancient ruins. The clear blue sky and the warm, golden light add to the sense of tranquility and serenity, making this photograph a beautiful testament to the rich history and timeless beauty of Florence and the surrounding countryside.
