Alexander Club in Rome - The NaFI (Navy, Army and Air Force Institute) had commandeered a department store about the size of Londons Selfridges. It was called the Alexander Club after the Allied commander Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis. Its many floors centred around an internal, roofed, open space on the floor of which was a pool with goldfish and a fountain! The 2nd Floor Ice Bar. Date: circa 1944

This photograph transports us back in time to the NaFI Alexander Club in Rome, Italy during the latter years of World War II. The NaFI, or Navy, Army and Air Force Institute, had taken over a grand department store, roughly the size of London's Selfridges, and renamed it after the Allied Commander, Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis. The Alexander Club was a hub of activity for the Allied troops, offering them a much-needed respite from the rigors of war. The second floor of the club was home to an extraordinary Ice Bar. Amidst the Mediterranean heat, soldiers could escape the summer's scorching temperatures and enjoy a refreshing drink in this unique, icy environment. The bar, with its frost-covered walls and icy decor, was a stark contrast to the warm Italian climate outside. The soldiers, bundled up in their winter gear, would gather around the bar, sharing stories and laughter as they sipped their drinks. The interior of the Ice Bar was a marvel in itself. The roofed, open space on the floor housed a pool filled with goldfish and a beautiful fountain, adding to the serene ambiance. The soldiers could sit by the poolside, watching the goldfish swim and listening to the gentle sound of the fountain, all while surrounded by the cool, soothing atmosphere of the Ice Bar. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Allied forces during World War II.
