King Louis IX, also known as Saint Louis, was a devout monarch who felt a deep personal calling to lead this expedition. The fleet, believed to have consisted of around 400 vessels, carried not only soldiers and knights but also priests, monks, and civilians, all eager to participate in this holy war.
