EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of Futtehabad, fought on April 2, 1879, was a pivotal moment in the Second Anglo-Afghan War. This historic photograph captures the aftermath of the battle, with British soldiers gathered around Lieutenant John Haughton Hamilton of the Guide Corps, as he is awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross for his exceptional bravery during the cavalry charge. The Second Anglo-Afghan War broke out in 1878, following the British invasion of Afghanistan to secure control of the region and prevent Russian expansion. The Battle of Futtehabad was a significant engagement in the conflict, with the British forces led by Lieutenant General Frederick Roberts attempting to dislodge the Afghan army from the fortified town. During the battle, Lieutenant Hamilton led a daring cavalry charge against the Afghan positions, despite being heavily outnumbered. With courage and determination, he and his men managed to break through the enemy lines, causing chaos and confusion among the Afghan ranks. The charge turned the tide of the battle in favor of the British forces, paving the way for their eventual victory. In recognition of his valorous actions, Lieutenant Hamilton was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for gallantry in the face of the enemy that could be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. The photograph shows the proud moment as the lieutenant receives his medal from a senior officer, surrounded by his comrades. The Battle of Futtehabad was a turning point in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, and Lieutenant Hamilton's brave charge will forever be remembered as a symbol of British military heroism.
