EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Crystal Palace Animals, a remarkable collection of prehistoric animal sculptures created by the renowned British artist Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins. Located in the grounds of the Crystal Palace in Sydenham, London, these life-size sculptures were unveiled in 1854, during the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Crystal Palace, an iconic glass and iron structure, was originally built to house the exhibition's exhibits and later moved to Sydenham in 1854. Waterhouse Hawkins, a pioneering figure in the field of prehistoric animal reconstruction, created these sculptures based on the most accurate scientific knowledge of the time. The artist collaborated with renowned paleontologist Richard Owen to ensure the anatomical accuracy of the sculptures. The resulting creations were so lifelike that they were initially mistaken for real animals by the public. The Crystal Palace Animals include a diverse range of prehistoric creatures, such as the Iguanodon, Megalosaurus, and Hylaeosaurus. These sculptures were not only a source of fascination for the public but also played a significant role in shaping the public's perception of prehistoric animals. The Crystal Palace Animals continue to captivate visitors to this day, serving as a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the Victorian era.
