EDITORS COMMENTS
James Atlay (1817-1894), the revered Bishop of Hereford, is depicted in this elegant and ornate photograph. Born on July 21, 1817, in the picturesque village of Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, Atlay was educated at the University of Oxford before being ordained as a deacon in 1843 and a priest in 1844. He served various parishes in Gloucestershire and Worcestershire before being appointed as the Bishop of Hereford on June 17, 1874. Atlay's tenure as Bishop of Hereford was marked by his dedication to the welfare of his diocese and his commitment to social reform. He was a strong advocate for education and established several schools and colleges in the region. He also worked tirelessly to improve the living conditions of the working class and was a vocal supporter of the temperance movement. Atlay's leadership was not without controversy, however. He was a staunch defender of the Anglican Church and clashed with the Roman Catholic Church over issues of religious freedom and the role of the Church in education. He was also criticized for his handling of the "Herefordshire Tithe War," a dispute over agricultural taxes that led to widespread protests and civil unrest. Despite these challenges, Atlay remained a respected and influential figure in the Church and in the community. He retired as Bishop of Hereford in 1891 and passed away on March 2, 1894. This photograph, taken during his time as Bishop, captures the dignity and grace of a man who dedicated his life to serving his faith and his people.
