This striking portrait captures the intensity and commanding presence of Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bessières, Duke of Istrie and Colonel General of the Cavalry of the Imperial Guard. Born in 1768 in the region of Foix, France, Bessières rose through the ranks of the military to become one of Napoleon Bonaparte's most trusted and capable generals. Bessières began his military career in the Royal Army under Louis XVI, but he joined the revolutionary forces in 1792. His exceptional leadership skills and strategic acumen quickly caught the attention of Napoleon, who appointed him as a general in the Army of Italy in 1796. Over the next few years, Bessières played a crucial role in many of Napoleon's victories, including the Battle of Marengo in 1800, where he commanded the cavalry charge that turned the tide of the battle. In recognition of his military prowess, Bessières was awarded the title of Marshal of the Empire in 1804 and the Duchy of Istrie in 1808. He continued to serve Napoleon loyally until the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, when he was exiled to the United States. This portrait, painted in the late 18th or early 19th century, captures Bessières in the prime of his military career.
