EDITORS COMMENTS
"Lord Curzon of Kedleston, Viceroy of India (1899-1905), is seen in this photograph from 1903, taken during his extensive travels through the Indian subcontinent. Accompanied by the Maharaja of Rewa and Captain Wigram, Curzon is shown in the heart of the Indian jungle, dressed in the appropriate attire for the terrain: a pith helmet shielding him from the sun, a turban protecting him from the heat, and a heavy jungle jacket to ward off the mosquitoes and other insects. The Maharaja of Rewa, a prominent Indian ruler, is dressed in traditional Indian clothing, adorned with jewels and a magnificent turban. He is shown carrying a gun, a common accessory for Indian nobility during hunting expeditions. Captain Wigram, a British army officer, is seen carrying a large bag, presumably filled with tiger skins or other trophies from their successful hunting trip. The trio is surrounded by the lush greenery of the Indian jungle, with elephants and other wildlife visible in the background. The sense of adventure and exploration is palpable, as Lord Curzon and his companions embark on yet another thrilling adventure in the vast and diverse land of India." This photograph captures the essence of the British Raj in India during the early 20th century, a time of exploration, conquest, and cultural exchange between the British and Indian peoples. The image offers a glimpse into the lives of the powerful British officials and Indian rulers, and the unique experiences they shared in the Indian jungle.
