EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment in history as Queen Victoria (1819-1901) pays a visit to wounded soldiers recovering from the Crimean War (1853-1856) at the Military Hospital in Woolwich, London, in 1856. The Crimean War was a significant conflict for the British Empire, and the bravery and sacrifices made by the soldiers were highly regarded. Upon the soldiers' return from the battlefield, Queen Victoria, who was deeply moved by their valor and dedication, took it upon herself to distribute the newly instituted Crimean War Medals for distinguished valour with her own hands. This heartfelt gesture was a testament to her deep connection with her soldiers and her unwavering support for the military. The image shows the Queen in her regal attire, wearing a white lace veil and holding a crimson velvet cushion, upon which rests the Crimean War Medal. Surrounded by her family, including her consort, Prince Albert (1819-1861), and her eldest son, Prince Albert Edward (later King Edward VII), she tenderly touches the hand of a soldier as she pins the medal onto his chest. The soldiers, some with bandaged heads and limbs, look up at her with a mix of gratitude and awe. This photograph beautifully encapsulates the spirit of compassion and resilience that defined the Crimean War era. Queen Victoria's visit to the wounded soldiers not only served as a symbol of hope and healing but also solidified her reputation as a caring and devoted monarch.
