EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the dramatic moment of the Salle des Jacobins, or the Jacobin Club, coming to a close on the night of 27-28 July 1794. The Salle des Jacobins was a key gathering place for radical members of the French Revolution, including the infamous Maximilien Robespierre. During the Reign of Terror, the club played a pivotal role in the implementation of the revolutionary government's most extreme policies, including the infamous September Massacres of 1792. However, as the excesses of the Terror became increasingly apparent, public sentiment began to turn against the radicals. On this fateful night, a group of deputies from the National Convention, led by Jean-Lambert Tallien and Jean-Baptiste Carrier, arrived at the Salle des Jacobins with the intention of shutting it down. The scene depicted in this print shows the moment of confrontation between the deputies and the Jacobins, with the former brandishing their swords and the latter defending their club. The closing of the Salle des Jacobins marked a turning point in the French Revolution. While it did not immediately signal the end of the Terror, it did represent a significant shift in public opinion against the radicals and their policies. In the aftermath of the closure, many Jacobins were arrested or went into hiding, and the National Convention began to take steps to rein in the excesses of the revolutionary government. The print serves as a powerful reminder of the tumultuous events of the French Revolution and the complex political dynamics that shaped it.
