EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the 1930s, the Spratts Pet Shop window at Ss Kresge & Co invites passersby to explore the wonders within. The window display is a vibrant and enticing tableau of delights for pet lovers, showcasing an array of merchandise that would have been both familiar and exciting to customers of the era. At the heart of the display, a group of goldfish swim gracefully in their crystal-clear bowls, their scales shimmering in the light. Above them, a sign advertises Spratts Gold Fish Food, promising to keep these aquatic creatures healthy and thriving. To the right, a selection of Spratts Dog Cakes catches the eye, with their enticing aroma no doubt drawing in canine visitors. The cakes, arranged neatly on a wooden shelf, come in various sizes and shapes, each one promising to provide a delicious and nutritious treat for man's best friend. In the upper left corner of the window, a row of popular music sheets adds a touch of whimsy and entertainment to the scene. These sheets, which could be purchased in the Pet Department located in the basement, would have allowed pet owners to play musical instruments alongside their pets, creating a unique bonding experience. The Pet Department itself, hidden beneath the bustling store, was a treasure trove of items for all types of animals. From bird cages and birdseed to rabbit hutches and guinea pig cages, the department catered to a wide range of pets. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich and varied world of pet ownership in the 1930s, a time when pets were cherished members of the family and their care was taken very seriously.
