The occasion was the annual Sunderland Memorial Service, held in memory of the four lives lost and many injured during a tragic incident that occurred just a year prior. On the 4th of June, 1955, an RAF Association annual conference was being held in the picturesque seaside town. The highlight of the event was a demonstration of the Sunderland flying boat, a large amphibious aircraft that was a staple of the Royal Air Force's maritime patrol squadrons.
