EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: The Ancient Emplacement of the Obelisk in the Gardens of Versailles, France (1700). This evocative image transports us back in time to the Gardens of Versailles in France, specifically to the ancient emplacement, or old location, of the Obelisk, which once stood proudly in the heart of the royal domain. The Obelisk, a magnificent ancient Egyptian monument, was originally brought to France by King Louis XIV in 1664 as a symbol of his power and grandeur. It was erected in the Place des Victoires in Paris before being moved to Versailles in 1675. In this photograph, taken in 1700, we can see the empty space where the Obelisk once stood, surrounded by the lush greenery and intricate landscaping of the Gardens. The absence of the monument adds a sense of intrigue and mystery, as we are left to imagine the grandeur and splendor it once brought to the scene. The ancient Obelisk, which dates back to the 13th century B.C., was originally located in the ancient city of Heliopolis, Egypt. It was brought to France as a gift from the Pope to King Louis XIV, who had it transported from Rome, where it had been since the Roman conquest of Egypt. The Obelisk was a symbol of the sun god Ra, and its transfer to France was meant to symbolize the power and divine right of the French monarchy. However, in 1675, the Obelisk was moved once again, this time to its current location in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. The reason for its removal from Versailles is not entirely clear, but it may have been due to the desire to create a grander and more central location for the monument in the heart of the city. This photograph serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of the Gardens of Versailles and the role that the Obelisk played in shaping the identity of the French monarchy. Despite its absence from this particular location, its legacy continues to inspire awe and wonder in visitors to the Gardens today.
