EDITORS COMMENTS
Naik Darwan Sing Negi of the 1st Battalion 39th Garhwal Rifles is depicted in this powerful image leading a bayonet charge during the early days of World War I. The date is 23/24 November 1914, and the scene unfolds on the Western Front. Negi, an Indian soldier, is shown with unwavering courage and determination as he rallies his comrades, urging them forward into the face of the enemy. The bravery displayed by Naik Darwan Sing Negi during this engagement was truly exceptional. He was amongst the first Indians to be awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration in the British Empire. The citation for his award reads, "For most conspicuous bravery. This N.C.O. led his Company in a bayonet charge on the enemy, and, although severely wounded in the thigh, continued to lead, and when the Company was temporarily held up, he personally charged, and, with his bayonet, killed 3 of the enemy, and captured 2 others. His coolness and gallantry under heavy fire set a fine example to his men." Negi's heroic actions on that fateful day not only saved the lives of his comrades but also paved the way for future Indian soldiers to prove their mettle in the British Army. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the immense courage and sacrifices made by soldiers from all corners of the world during the Great War.
