120th Infantry on the top of Jelep La Pass in the snow, between Sikkim, India, and Tibet, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts members of the 120th Infantry regiment standing atop Jelep La Pass in the snowy Himalayas, marking the border between Sikkim, India, and Tibet, in 1904. The image is taken from an intriguing album that offers fresh insights into a little-known campaign: the British Tibet Expedition. Led by Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, this military endeavor was authorized by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, with the objective of countering perceived Russian influence near the border. The expedition eventually secured a series of concessions from Tibet, then nominally under Chinese rule. However, the question of whether the expedition's outcomes justified its costs remains debatable. This album, passed down through the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, who served as ADC (Aide-de-Camp) to Colonel Younghusband, provides a unique visual record of the expedition. The photographs within the album capture various aspects of the journey: military scenes, monasteries, breathtaking landscapes, towns, and local inhabitants. The 120th Infantry soldiers in this photograph, bundled up against the cold, stand proudly atop Jelep La Pass, having successfully navigated the challenging terrain and Tibetan defenses. Their achievement was a significant milestone in the larger mission to assert British influence in the region. This evocative image offers a glimpse into a fascinating moment in history, providing a testament to the courage and determination of those who participated in the Tibet Expedition.
