EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the Village of Ndua in the Congo region of Central Africa during the 19th century. The image is taken from Henry M. Stanley's book "El Congo y la Creacion del Estado Independiente de este nombre. Historia de los Trabajos y Exploraciones Verificados" (The Congo and the Founding of its Free State. A Story of Work and Exploration), published in Barcelona around 1890. The Village of Ndua is situated along the banks of the Congo River, with several huts made of mud and thatch roofs visible in the image. European influence is evident in the presence of a Belgian steamboat and a European man in a hat, observing the scene from a canoe. The Congolese people, dressed in animal skins and carrying various tools, are shown navigating the river in their own canoes. The 19th century was a period of intense exploration and colonization of Africa by European powers. Henry Morton Stanley, an American journalist and explorer, played a significant role in the Congo's history. He was sent by King Leopold II of Belgium to explore the region and establish a Belgian presence. The establishment of the Free State of the Congo, which lasted from 1885 to 1908, marked the beginning of Belgian rule and the exploitation of the Congo's natural resources. The image of the Village of Ndua serves as a reminder of the complex history of Africa, where indigenous peoples and European explorers and colonizers interacted and shaped each other's lives. The ethnic diversity of the Congo region is evident in the different appearances and clothing of the people depicted in the image. The landscape, with its lush vegetation and the winding Congo River, adds to the sense of the natural beauty and richness of the region.
