EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the Tony Lovelock Collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, we find the Boulton Paul Defiant F.I N1671, registration number D-EW, proudly displayed at the Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon on the last day of 1991. The Defiant, a British twin-engine, radar-equipped night fighter aircraft, was a significant addition to the Royal Air Force's (RAF) fleet during World War II. The Defiant, designed by the Boulton Paul Aircraft Company, was unique in its design, with its observer and gunners seated in an enclosed cockpit directly behind the pilot, providing 360-degree coverage and protection from enemy fire. This configuration allowed the Defiant to engage enemies effectively, even in the darkest hours of the night. The Defiant first entered service with the RAF in 1939, and its distinctive shape and innovative design quickly gained attention. However, the aircraft's performance was found to be lacking in comparison to single-engine fighters, and it was eventually relegated to secondary roles such as training and target towing. Despite its limitations as a fighter, the Defiant's radar capabilities made it an invaluable asset to the RAF during the Battle of the Atlantic, where it was used to protect convoys from U-boat attacks. The Defiant's radar system, known as AI Mk.IV, was the first airborne radar system to be used operationally by the RAF. As we gaze upon this historic aircraft in the photograph, we are reminded of the vital role it played in the defense of the United Kingdom during World War II. The Boulton Paul Defiant F.I N1671, now preserved at the Royal Air Force Museum, stands as a testament to the ingenuity and determination of those who designed, built, and flew this remarkable aircraft.
