EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a rare moment of unity within the British Royal Family, taken circa 1922. Seated amongst the gathered royals is King George V (1865-1936), the monarch at the time, wearing his full regalia, complete with the Imperial State Crown and an elaborate beakskin hat adorned with ermine fur. To his left is Queen Mary (1867-1953), the Queen Consort, wearing a grand gown and diamond diadem. Standing behind the King, from left to right, are: Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1900-1974), the third son of King George V, wearing a uniform with the Order of the Thistle and a tall busby hat; Prince Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), the eldest son of the King, wearing the uniform of the Royal Navy with a tall fur cap and medals; and Prince Albert, Duke of York (later King George VI), the second son of the King, wearing a uniform with the Order of the Garter and a tall busby hat. In the front row, next to Queen Mary, is Viscount Lascelles, later the 6th Earl of Harewood (1882-1947), wearing a uniform with the Order of the Thistle and a tall busby hat. To his right is his wife, Viscountess Lascelles (formerly Princess Mary, later Princess Royal, and Countess of Harewood) (1897-1965), wearing a fur-trimmed cape and a tall hat with a beak and a veil. This official and ceremonial gathering of the British monarchy showcases the grandeur and tradition of the royal family in the 1920s, with each member dressed in their formal attire and adorned with their respective titles and orders.
