EDITORS COMMENTS
"Step back in time with this photograph of The Broadway Theatre in New Cross, South East London, taken in the year 1908. Situated on New Cross Road/Deptford Broadway, opposite Deptford High Street, on the corner of Tanners Hill, this magnificent building opened its doors to the public in 1897. Designed by the renowned architect WGR Sprague, The Broadway Theatre was a true gem of the late Victorian era. Its ornate facade, adorned with intricate detailing and elegant columns, speaks volumes of the grandeur and sophistication of the period. The theatre was originally intended for live performances, hosting plays, concerts, and other cultural events. However, by 1911, the times were changing, and The Broadway Theatre was transformed into a cinema. Despite this transition, the theatre continued to be a beloved institution in the community, providing entertainment for generations. Tragically, the theatre met its end in the 1960s, when it was demolished, leaving behind only memories and photographs like this one. WGR Sprague's other notable work, the still-standing Notting Hill Coronet, serves as a reminder of his architectural brilliance and the rich history of London's theatre scene in the 1900s." This photograph is an enchanting glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when The Broadway Theatre was a beacon of culture and community in New Cross, South East London.
