EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the Canadair C-4 Argonaut G-ALHS (msn 164) of the Republic of Biafra government, making a striking appearance at Castle Donington in October 1969. Originally operated by British Overseas Airways Corporation as Astra before being taken over by British Midland, this aircraft had an interesting journey ahead. Eventually purchased by Chartwell Aviation with plans for operation by Templewood Aviation Ltd on behalf of the Republic of Biafra government, its delivery was unfortunately thwarted by HM Customs. Despite its turbulent history, this Canadair C-4 Argonaut stood out with its sleek design and powerful presence on the tarmac. The image captures a moment frozen in time, showcasing the beauty and complexity of aviation during that era. Sadly, fate had other plans for this aircraft as it met its end at Castle Donington on May 11th, 1970 when it was broken up. However, through this photograph, we can still appreciate the legacy and significance of the Canadair C-4 Argonaut G-ALHS in aviation history. It serves as a reminder of a time when each plane had its own story to tell and left an indelible mark on those who witnessed its flight.
