EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a poignant moment following the wedding of Princess Beatrice, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria, to Prince Henry of Battenberg on the 23rd of July 1885. The newlyweds exchanged vows at St. Mildred's Church in Windsor, surrounded by their loved ones and the grandeur of the Victorian era. As the celebrations came to an end, the remains of the magnificent wedding cake were brought to the barracks of Windsor Castle for the soldiers to enjoy. In this photograph, we see several soldiers, dressed in their military uniforms, carefully dividing up the remnants of the cake. Their expressions convey a sense of camaraderie and appreciation for this special treat. The scene is a reminder of the important role the military played in the daily life of the monarchy during the 19th century. Princess Beatrice, born in 1857, was known for her intelligence, strong character, and independent spirit. Her marriage to Prince Henry, who was also a grandson of Queen Victoria, brought the two families even closer. Tragically, Prince Henry passed away in 1896, leaving Beatrice a widow at the young age of 39. This photograph, taken in the picturesque Highlands of Windsor Castle, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the elegance and tradition of a Victorian wedding and the simple pleasures of sharing a sweet treat with friends.
