EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a significant moment in the history of the British Raj as His Majesty, the Emperor of India, descends the steps of the imperial train to inspect the grand guard of honor upon his arrival at Delhi for the Delhi Durbar of 1911. The Emperor, who was in fact King George V, is accompanied by his trusted viceroy and governor-general, Lord Hardinge. Lord Hardinge, a British diplomat and statesman, served in this esteemed position from 1910 to 1916. The Delhi Durbar was an imperial-style mass assembly organized by the British to mark the succession of an Emperor or Empress of India. Held at Coronation Park in Delhi, India, it was the third such event, following those in 1877 and 1903, at the height of the British Empire. The grandeur and pomp of the Durbar reflected the immense influence and power wielded by the British in their Indian colony, a testament to their dominion over the Indian subcontinent. The image underscores the intricate interplay of colonialism, power, and tradition during this period of Commonwealth history.
