First Encounters with the Enchanting Palki of Calcutta: A Victorian Adventure In the heart of the 19th century, as the sun began to set over the bustling city of Calcutta (now Kolkata), a British gentleman, dressed in his finest linen suit, prepared for an unforgettable experience. The air was thick with the aroma of spices and the cacophony of exotic sounds filled the streets. His curiosity piqued, he had heard tales of the traditional Indian palanquin, or palki, a covered box for transporting people of importance. Eager to explore this intriguing mode of transportation, he approached the palki-wallahs, who were skillfully maneuvering their human-drawn vehicles along the cobblestone streets. With a mixture of excitement and trepidation, he attempted to enter the palki, only to discover that the low entrance proved more challenging than anticipated. After several comical attempts, he finally managed to climb in, much to the amusement of the onlookers. The palki-wallahs secured the poles at either end and, with a swift and powerful push, they set off at a speed of around 6 miles per hour. The gentleman was enchanted as the palki glided smoothly over the uneven terrain, providing a unique perspective of the vibrant cityscape. The blinds shielded him from the elements, while the gentle rocking motion lulled him into a sense of tranquility. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the gentleman's first encounter with the palki came to an end. He stepped out, feeling a newfound appreciation for the rich cultural traditions of Calcutta. This unforgettable experience left him with memories that would last a lifetime, and he longed for more adventures in this land.
