EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage lantern slide depicts the historic moment when the German Battle Cruiser Nuremburg was re-floated in Scapa Flow, Orkney, on 3rd July 1919. After the end of World War I, the German High Seas Fleet, including the Nuremburg, was ordered to be scuttled to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Allied forces. The fleet was anchored in Scapa Flow, a large natural harbor in the Orkney Islands, when the order was given on 21st June 1919. The Nuremburg, a powerful warship with a displacement of 12,500 tons and armed with ten 28 cm (11 in) guns, was one of the largest vessels in the scuttled fleet. The process of sinking the ships began on 21st June, but the Nuremburg and two other battlecruisers, Seydlitz and Derfflinger, managed to escape the initial scuttling attempts. They were later surrounded and forced to surrender on 24th June. The Nuremburg, along with the other two battlecruisers, was raised in a joint operation by the British Royal Navy and the Dutch Navy. In this photograph, we see the Nuremburg being re-floated, marking the successful completion of this complex and significant naval operation. The image offers a fascinating glimpse into the aftermath of World War I and the efforts to restore order in the European waters. This photograph, part of The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, captures the essence of a bygone era, providing a captivating insight into the history of naval warfare and the events that shaped the early 20th century.
