The Graham family, India, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from 1904, we witness a moment in history that has long been shrouded in intrigue: The Graham family, India, captured during the Tibet Expedition, an often overlooked campaign that saw a British military force challenge Tibetan defenses to seize control of Lhasa. Led by Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, this expedition was authorized by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, in response to growing concerns over Russian influence and perceived encroachment on the border. The album from which this image originates is a fascinating firsthand account of this historic event, passed down through the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, who served as an ADC (Aide-de-Camp) to Younghusband. The expedition's journey began in India and ultimately resulted in several concessions from Tibet, which was nominally under Chinese control at the time. However, the question of whether the effort was worth the return remains a subject of debate. This collection of photographs offers a glimpse into the expedition's various aspects, revealing military preparations, monasteries, breathtaking scenery, towns, and local inhabitants. The images provide a unique window into a time when the British Empire expanded its reach into the far reaches of the world, leaving an indelible mark on history. This photograph, in particular, showcases the Graham family in their formal attire, likely taken during a stop along the expedition's route. The family members' expressions convey a sense of both excitement and trepidation, reflecting the uncertainty and adventure that accompanied the journey into the heart of Tibet. The album, now available through Mary Evans Prints Online, serves as a testament to the rich history of the Tibet Expedition and the intriguing stories that lie within.
