EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the elegant lines and impressive presence of H.M.S. Pelican (F86), an Egret-class sloop of the Royal Navy, built by Thornycroft in Woolston around the 1950s. Commissioned in 1939, the Pelican was part of the 2nd Flotilla and served as a valuable asset in the transport and transportation of personnel and supplies during peacetime and wartime operations. The Egret-class sloops, also known as 80-tonners, were designed for patrol and escort duties in coastal waters. H.M.S. Pelican, with her distinctive silhouette and sleek design, was a formidable vessel, measuring 235 feet in length and displacing around 860 tons. Her powerful engines could reach speeds of up to 18 knots, making her a swift and agile addition to the Royal Naval Fleet. The Pelican's impressive armament included a 4.7-inch gun forward and a 2-pounder anti-aircraft gun aft, providing her with the capability to defend herself against potential threats. Her crew consisted of around 80 men, who were responsible for the day-to-day running of the ship and its operations. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Royal Navy and the vital role played by vessels such as H.M.S. Pelican during the mid-20th century. With her proud and majestic appearance, the Pelican continues to be a symbol of the courage, determination, and innovation of the men and women who served in the Royal Navy.
