EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Handley Page HPR.7 Dart-Herald G-AODE (msn 1) during a photo-shoot rendezvous with Handley Page's HP Victor and HP Hastings photographic aircraft on 30th August 1958, en route to the 1958 Farnborough Airshow. The Handley Page HPR.7 Dart-Herald was the first prototype of this aeronautical marvel, designed as a turboprop airliner that could carry up to 54 passengers. The image exudes an air of anticipation and excitement as the three aircraft align for a photographic session. However, this moment of tranquility was short-lived. Shortly after this photograph was taken, the starboard Rolls-Royce Dart turboprop engine of the Handley Page HPR.7 Dart-Herald (G-AODE) suffered a catastrophic turbine explosion. The engine erupted into flames, and the starboard engine fell off the wing. Despite the harrowing circumstances, the pilot, who was also accompanied by his wife as a passenger, displayed remarkable skill and bravery. He managed to make a safe and controlled forced landing, saving all on board from harm. This extraordinary event underscores the courage and expertise of the aviation pioneers who pushed the boundaries of flight technology. This photograph, from The Peter Butt Aviation Collection, is a testament to the thrilling and sometimes perilous world of aviation during the late 1950s. It encapsulates the spirit of innovation and determination that drove the development of new aircraft models, as well as the inherent risks and challenges that accompanied these groundbreaking advances.
