Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR. 1A undergoing an engine change
Royal Air Force - A Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.1A of No.3 Squadron undergoing an engine change in the field, under the cover of an inflatable hide, during Exercise Heath Fir in Germany. (Use of the inflatable hide was short-lived, due to the logistics of keeping the blower running, persistent problems with leaks and tears, not to mention the difficulty in storage, set-up and tear-down). (Note that to remove the engine, the wing had to be removed first, though this was a relatively simple task, as long as the tapered attachment bolts were easily removed. The engine was more difficult with less than a centimetre clearance in places and limited access to some connecting parts.). Date: 1976

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history as a Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.1A of No.3 Squadron undergoes an engine change during Exercise Heath Fir in Germany back in 1976. The aircraft is hidden under the cover of an inflatable hide, showcasing the innovative methods used by the Royal Air Force at that time.
The process of changing the engine was no easy feat, requiring meticulous attention to detail and skilled hands to navigate through tight spaces with less than a centimeter clearance in some areas. Removing the wing first was necessary before tackling the engine, but thanks to easily removable tapered attachment bolts, this task was relatively straightforward.
However, despite the ingenuity of using an inflatable hide for cover during maintenance operations, it proved to be short-lived due to logistical challenges such as keeping the blower running and dealing with leaks and tears. The difficulties in storage, set-up, and tear-down also contributed to its limited use.
This print serves as a reminder of the dedication and expertise required in maintaining military aircraft like the Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.1A, highlighting both the advancements made in aviation technology over time and the resourcefulness of those who work tirelessly behind-the-scenes to keep these machines flying high.
